The dates are August 1, August 8, August 22 and August 29.

Bring your lawn chairs to sit on, blankets to get cozy under and picnic baskets, or pick some snacks and hot chocolate from one of the many eateries lining the plaza or in the village. All ages are welcome and all films will be rated PG or G (Parental Guidance or General). Smoking and alcohol will not be permitted.

The series is weather permitting and will be moved to Millennium Place in the event of rain showers with seating available for free on a first come first serve basis.  The call will be made at 6:00 pm on the evening of the screenings. WFFS gratefully acknowledges the generous support of the Resort Municipality of Whistler and the Province of BC to produce the series.

Wednesday, August 29: SCORE: A HOCKEY MUSICAL

Director: Michael McGowan  Starring: Noah Reid, Allie McDonald, Olivia Newton-John, Marc Jordan, Nelly Furtado

“A warm, irreverent and irresistibly goofy love letter to Canada’s national pastime, “Score: A Hockey Musical” pretty much says it all, serving up singing-and-dancing hockey players, gentle satire and even musical icon Olivia Newton-John, in one unapologetically pleasant package.” Michael Rechtshaffen, The Hollywood Reporter

Featuring a long list of famous Canadian cameos, Score: A Hockey Musical is a love letter to Canada that is a wry celebration of all the qualities that define us as a people – kindness, politeness, self-effacement and an ability to poke fun at ourselves. The story centres on Farley Gordon (Noah Reid), a 17-year-old who’s led a sheltered life, raised on a diet of organic living, home schooling and trips to the art gallery. His best friend is Eve (Allie MacDonald), the girl who’s lived next door since they were both three. Much to the dismay of his intellectual parents (Olivia Newton-John and Marc Jordan), Farley loves to play shinny with the local rink rats. To their even greater dismay, Farley is signed by a junior league team, where his stick-handling skills make him an instant star. But Farley discovers that hockey fame comes with a price, including the expectation to fight on the ice. Throw in a changing relationship with Eve – and Farley finds himself losing his way.

Wednesday, August 22: MARLEY

Director: Kevin Macdonald  Featuring: Bob Marley (Archival Footage), Ziggy Marley, Rita Marley, Jimmy Cliff

“I think what’s great about the film is though there have been a lot of things done on Bob, I think this one will give people a more emotional connection to Bob’s life as a man – not just as a reggae legend or a mythical figure, but his life as a man.” – Ziggy Marley

“Marley, an ambitious and comprehensive film, does what is probably the best possible job of documenting an important life.” – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

From Academy Award-winning director Kevin Macdonald (One Day In September, The Last King of Scotland) comes the story of a towering figure of musical history, whose music and message has transcended different cultures, languages and creeds to resonate around the world today as powerfully as when he was alive. Bob Marley’s universal appeal, impact on music history and role as a social and political prophet is both unique and unparalleled. MARLEY is the definitive life story of the musician, revolutionary, and legend, from his early days to his rise to international superstardom. Made with the support of the Marley family, the film features rare footage, incredible performances and revelatory interviews with the people that knew him best.

Wednesday, August 8: THE WHALE

Director: Suzanne Chisholm and Michael Parfit  Executive Producers: Ryan Reynolds, Scarlett Johansson  Narrated By: Ryan Reynolds

Narrated by Ryan Reynolds, The Whale tells the true story of a young, wild killer whale – an orca – nicknamed Luna, who lost contact with his family on the coast of British Columbia and turned up alone in a narrow stretch of sea between mountains, a place called Nootka Sound. Orcas are social. They live with their families all their lives. An orca who gets separated usually just fades away and dies. Luna was alone, but he didn’t fade away. There weren’t any familiar orcas in Nootka Sound, but there were people, in boats and on the shore. So he started trying to make contact. And people welcomed him. Most of them. This contact did not turn out to be simple. It was as if we humans weren’t ready for him. This story is about what happened then. The Whale celebrates the life of a smart, friendly, determined, transcendent being from the other world of the sea who appeared among us like a promise out of the blue: that the greatest secrets in life are still to be discovered.

The Bud Light Crankworx Concert Series will drop free concerts on Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11. Straight Outta Cromptom – Canada Day & Noise Pollution

July 4, 2012

Until Canada Day, I hadn’t heard of Jim Byrnes. It is a fact that I should be embarrassed about according to anyone I spoke to. Apparently he is a “blues/gospel genius” and he is a Canadian. Whether I should have known who he is or not, I enjoyed the show. It was the end to a pretty epic Canada Day for the Crompton clan. We Canada Day paraded, sang along to Fred Penner, dunked and got dunked at the dunk tank, picnicked in the park, collected balloon animals, danced to Jim Byrnes and the Sojourners and then watched Canada Day fireworks. For a 3, 5, 7 and 9 year old this was a truly epic day.

I spent a lot of time during that epic day talking to people about whether all of that is good value. Responses were pretty positive but then it was a pretty partisan crowd… being only attendees. Carolyn and I talked about it on the way home at the end of the night. We imagined a similar day in Seattle or Portland and decided it would have us coming back for more.

I was about to go to bed and dream about maple syrup,  log driving and hockey when I decided to check my email. There was an email in my inbox complaining about the concerts in the park… too loud, reduce property values and damage the community’s quality of life. So instead of going to bed I have kept Carolyn up talking about balancing Whistler’s conflicting interests.

The balancing act is an interesting one. If the only concern was whether or not these investments add value for our visitors I think the answer is a pretty clear yes. If you add that these events draw local families to the mix… I think the value grows. For me the question is does the value to the community and tourist outweigh the ‘noise pollution’ created… if you want to call it that.

So what do you think? Is putting on a show that will keep locals and visitors in the village spending worth frustrating some other local residents? Does the fact that we are a tourist town mean we need to overlook noise bylaws now and then? Can a Canadian really play the blues?

Since I have been absent from WIA, the RMOW has:

  1. Created a public engagement process considering higher education in Whistler – The process is scheduled to be nine months and will consider all opportunities to diversify Whistler’s economy into education. Thoughts?
  2. Implemented the findings of the Illegal Spaces Task Force – This means that below grade space is no longer counted against a house overall gross floor area (GFA). Thoughts?
  3. Struck an Festivals Events & Animation (FE&A) Oversight Committee and a Resort Municipality Initiative (RMI) Oversight Committee – These committees are made of local experts and representatives and will direct how the RMOW spends RMI funds that the province provides to drive tourism. Thoughts?
  4. Awarded Florence Peterson and Joan Richoz the Freedom of the Municipality – It is the highest honor a community can give to a person and these two individuals are the first women since Myrtle Philip to receive the award… about time!
  5. A lot of other stuff. If you have questions or comments you would like me to address in future columns please email me at jcrompton@whistler.ca. Your input is really appreciated!

Whistler Presents More Music Thanksgiving Long Weekend

October 8, 2011

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) is bringing the music back for Thanksgiving Long Weekend, and this time it will be under the roof of Whistler Olympic Plaza’s pavilion. Great news since we all know what Autumn can be like here in Whistler!

Whistler Presents will bring good times for families all weekend. At 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday October 8 and 9, 2011, the popular musical television duo Bobs and Lolo will perform their high-energy kids’ show. Tickets are available in advance at Millenium Place and whistler.com, and are $10 per child (2 and up); parents are free.

Today’s free Whistler Presents Concert will feature Whistler-based Animal Nation at 3 p.m. followed by Nelson B.C.’s Wassabi Collective at 4:15 p.m.

On Sunday at 3 p.m., Whistler Presents will feature free concerts from Montreal-based trio Hellbound Hepcats, known for a hip-shaking rhythm that’s all their own. At 4:15 p.m., Whistler’s favorite party band, Five Alarm Funk will shake it up to close out the weekend.

Whistler Olympic Plaza is an outdoor, covered venue so please dress warmly.
