TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival goes to the dogs

April 20, 2012

Whistler WAG Dog Fest

Tomorrow, grab your favourite pooch and head to the Whistler Village Stroll, beside the gazebo. WAG will be hosting the annual Whistler Dog Festival, with fun for the whole family from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All day long there will be super fun entertainment featuring agility, Frisbee and other tricks by The K9 Incredibles and freestyle dance by Paws 2 Dance. There will also be exhibitors from the Sea-to-Sky corridor with everything you need to keep your pup happy and safe. And make sure to say hi to Digger, the WAG mascot, who will be giving away fun stuff.

But the best part of the day will definitely be the Super Pooch Dogfest Parade. All WAG dogs and their owners are invited to dress up (funny collars are acceptable and full-on matching costumes are encouraged). Strut your stuff in the parade, head back to the gazebo to show off for the judges and then you your dog could be the winner of the Super Pooch Dogfest contest. Up for grabs are great merchant gifts valued at $150, a page in the next WAG calendar and the esteemed title of FACE OF DOGFEST!

To register for the parade, email media@whistlerwag.com or drop by the WAG booth between 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Zero To Hero At 72Hr Filmmaker Showdown

April 18, 2012

Watch the winning film for the 72Hr Filmmaker Showdown now!

Destiny was the theme of “Zero,” the winning film for the Olympus 72Hr Filmmaker Showdown at the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival and it seems destiny also played a huge role behind the scenes in this film as well.

Zero, winning film, 72 hr Filmmaker Showdown, TWSSF, TELUS, World Ski and Snowboard Festival, Olympus

Ian Dunsmore and Mark O’Krafka aren’t strangers to the 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown with this year representing their fourth and third entries to the competition respectively. They weren’t even planning on competing until the two were enticed by Olympus’s decision to offer up an additional $5,000 to the existing $10,000 prize pot if the winning submission was shot using their gear.

“The idea of using their cameras and trying out something new was intriguing to us,” says Dunsmore, Outdun Productions. “The camera is so compact, it really let us get into tight spots and we were able to capture shots we never could have got to with our regular equipment.”

The film was an artfully crafted and poignant story about a tiny, lost Styrofoam plane, pining to return home to its maker. One of the outstanding factors of this film was the fact that the surprise prop given to the teams at the Mandatory Director’s Meeting was actually cast as the central character of the film “Zero.”

“Our original story arc was going to follow a snowflake through its lifecycle but as soon as we saw the prop, we knew we had to go with the plane,” says Dunsmore. “Right after the directors’ meeting we went to a coffee shop, sat there for two hours and wrote the script.”

Using the plane instead of the original snowflake idea was almost a disastrous mistake. Read more

Today’s Awesome @wssf – Day 6

April 18, 2012

Pat Hui photo

Last night’s Olympus 72 Hour Filmmaker Showdown  was a truly awesome event with a submission called “Zero” taking home 1st place and $10,000 PLUS an additional $5,000 since they shot the film entirely on Olympus equipment. “Zero” was an artfully crafted and poignant story about a tiny lost styrofoam plane, pining to return home to it’s maker. One of the outstanding factors of this film was the fact that the surprise prop given to the teams at the Mandatory Director’s Meeting was actually cast as the central character of the film “Zero.” We’ll keep our eyes peeled for this gem to appear on Vimeo and will share as soon as we find it online! Shout out to Olympus as well, I have an Olympus Pen EP-2 and love it so it was no surprise to me to see such impressive work come from their equipment.

Here’s what’s on today at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival:

The Proof: Russell Dalby

April 17, 2012

Once having come to terms with the fact the culinary arts were not his true calling, Russell hurled himself into photography and has earned a himself a name in the industry over the past decade.  He spends the majority of his days sledding and shooting from dawn until dusk in the Whistler backcountry, or wherever the snow may be.   Russ has traveled the globe shooting mountain ranges from the Swiss Alps to the Patagonian Cordillera del Paine and is always planning more trips…could there be a book in the future??  He was recently showcased in the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival’s prestigious Pro Photographer Showdown, is Monster Energy’s Canadian staff photographer and is one of two senior photographers at King Snow magazine.   He is an artist, mountain man, comedian, friend, and truly inspirational human. -Shanon Knedlik

Tonight – Pecha Kucha Night Whistler Vol. 6

April 16, 2012

If you don’t have plans tonight consider Pecha Kucha Night Whistler taking place TONIGHT at Maxx Fish 8-11pm as part of the will take place during the TELUS World Ski and Snowboard Festival. Pecha Kucha means “chit-chat” in Japanese and is kind of like show and tell for grown-ups. Each presentation gets 20 slides with 20 seconds to explain each slide, ensuring the audience is spoon-fed their inspiration. I really love this format as the topics are generally way outside my knowledge base and bite-sized pieces of passion go down easy. Tickets are $10 and include one drink making this one of the best events of the year! Get them at the Activity Centre next to the Whistler Conference Centre or at the door.

Here are the presenters for the evening:

Chili Thom – Artist

Chili is one of Whistler’s most beloved artists and will be sharing some random ramblings about the joy of living artistically… He hasn’t given us much info since he doesn’t want to spoil the presentation.

Nicole Lauzon – Black Diamond Betties

Nicole Lauzon aka Natural Spiller will be talking derby to us as she tells the story of Whistler’s first flat track roller derby and why the sport is here to stay.

Hana Dethlefsen - Cookbook Author / Museum Educator

Hana wanted to build a better cookbook so she got the users to participATE. Her presentation is called The FEEDback Project.

JF Pelchat – NOW Snowboarding

JF is a snowboarding icon who has can now add “inventor” to his resume. He has developed a revolutionary binding called Now and his presentation will take us to Chile where he and his crew  tested their  revolutionary binding.

Mike Douglas – Freeskier and filmmaker Switchback Entertainment

As the godfather of newschool, Mike Douglas is likely one of the world’s best travelled professional skiers. One of his career’s stand out trips took place this winter, a trip to Russia’s North Caucasus region.

Leslie Anthony  - Book Author and Pecha Kucha Night Whistler mainstay

Les has presented at every single Pecha Kucha Whistler Night and he is always a surprise and a delight. And when I say surprise, I mean it. He won’t tell me what topic he is planning to present.

Asta Kovanen – Textile Artist

Asta will be sharing her experience of returning to school to study Textile Arts  and telling tales about some of the interesting historical myths/stories she’s heard along the way. Her presentation is called Superstit(ch)ions: Stories, Myths & Textile Arts.

We’ll also hear from Dave Olson, VP of  Community at Hootsuite, artist Chili Thom, Madeleine Grant and Marcus Eriksson!

Big Hip 1st Place Darcy Sharpe. John Scarth photo

The TTR 5-Star Monster Energy Big Hip contest at the TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival went off last night with 16-year-old Whistler-local Darcy Sharpe getting crowned victor. He walked away with $15,000, not bad for a night’s work . It was an amazing performance as were the musical performances from Swollen Members and the Trouble Gang. The packed crowd of over  8,000 fans got quite a show.
