Whistler Half Marathon is Growing!
Whistler, BC – Canada’s hottest half marathon running event is growing to accommodate the demands of runners wishing to run the scenic course.
The cap of registered athletes for the half marathon distance will increase by 10% from 1,000 to 1,100 runners for 2013. In addition, a new 10km course will be added to the event’s offerings to address the demand from runners across the Pacific Northwest that have placed The North Face Whistler Half Marathon on their “A” list of regional running events.
“Our growth plan has always had the addition of another distance to be added to the mix of offerings on race weekend, and now that we are entering our 3rd year with a loyal running community we felt it was time to increase the offerings to make our event available to more athletes” says Dave Clark, race director.
While the 10km distance is just shy of half the 21.1km distance already offered, the course will be similar, following a route that uses the first third of the half marathon course, runs through the village, and also starts and finishes at Whistler Olympic Plaza. “The 10km course will offer a similar experience for runners looking for a shorter distance. The 10km distance is a wonderful way for new runners to experience the excitement of longer distance events, and is also a great way for athletes training for longer distances, such as a full marathon or Ironman Canada, to get in some race training” adds Clark.
The Little Rippers Kids Run, presented by Rokmaster Resources will also return in 2013 following a successful inaugural year. With more than 100 kids toeing the start line in Whistler Olympic Plaza last year, the kids run was a spectator favorite and introduced a lot of children to the excitement of distance running.
General registration for all events opens on New Year’s Day at 9am on line at www.whistlerhalfmarathon.com . Registration fees for the half marathon distance will remain the same as 2012 at $78 inclusive of taxes and fees. For the 10km distance, the registration fee will be $45 (inclusive). And for the kids run a registration fee of $10 will apply.
