T.A.G. – Back To The Grind

February 10, 2012

This is another one of those questions, what the heck is this or was it before I started tweakin?  The winner gets…..?

Hello Friends and fans of art and W.I.A.

I hope that includes everyone!!!

Back to the grind and routine of production and the art of the quick tear-down. Big week and many goings on in Whis this week. First, it is a bit of a sad day for me. I must regrettably tear down the “Paper This” show today. Boo-hoo. I know your like “Dude,  just do another one.”

Sure, but it is not that easy. This show took much time and effort not only to produce but to advertise, tour and set up and tear down. I also toured the show to four venues. The show was hosted in Van, Squish and twice in Whis. Alas, the end is nigh. Just being funny nostalgic. Don’t worry, I will do another one – bigger and better.  Thank you venues and artists. This was one of my best shows!!! It also came down fast because of the hanging method of Scotia Plaza. Awesome. Made my job easy. Thank you Andrea and the gang.

Well, it seems I am also making a debut as a painter Monday night. Cero Worldwide is having their 10th Anniversary at Maxx Fish and you’re welcome to come and be part of the night.  There will be many DJ’s, acts, hairdressing live with Sue and art. Lots of art –  Andy Fenwick, Chili, myself and Granpa Pepe will be in full force. Come check out the night as it is a fundraiser for Cero Worldwide friends. Entry is $10 but that gets you a drink, woot woot. Read more

T.A.G. – The Cuban Version

February 3, 2012

This foto is of the heart of old Habana from our hotel. Looks just like Whistler eh?

Hello all and welcome to the Cuban version of W.I.A  arts column.

Just kidding, my Spanish is not that good, though I wish I could speak Spanish fluently. Wouldn’t you? For almost the last two weeks I have visited Veradero, Cuba and Habana. Wow, that’s all I can say! I have heard people say Cuba is a photographer’s wet dream. Well, I can certainly attest to that. Once we immersed ourselves in the local culture we found ourselves unusually relaxed, safe and very comfortable in a country not known for comfort. We were smitten.

Me, with the photographs, and my friend just enjoying it and snapping away casually. You can’t help but take pictures there. The people, architecture, art,  history, need I say more? As much as Whistler is a mecca for skiing and winter sports, Cuba is to music, nightlife, history, art and ohh, a good dash of communism. The quality of subject matter is staggering, considering you like that style of content. I found it almost overwhelming.

I almost would like to go back soon and continue shooting. The people were generally so open and receptive to the photos it made it that much easier to photograph the people naturally in such a beautiful setting, increasing the strength of the shots. If I can suggest a vacation to anyone in our area in the next upcoming months, it would be pretty darn easy to recommend Cuba as a destination for a break from the Whistler winter. I know how I feel and that is, recharged, happy, sad and overall, throughly content with the the trip. Plan your destinations within the country wisely and make sure you don’t go in hurricane season. Try to learn a little Spanish, it really helps and don’t forget a lotttttttt of memory cards. I shot a total of over 60 gigs of memory. The majority of it was produced in Habana in three days!! Have fun and don’t forget the secret sauce (sunscreen).

Getting back to local art news.  I unfortunately missed the opening of my “Paper This” show but oh well, can’t go to all the openings, hahaha. It’s ok because I have more planned shortly.  On March 21 there will be a group show at the Whistler Brewery. The title for the show is, “The Industrial Show”.  I thought the theme would be fun as in a ski town one would not think of that as a topic. We just have to wait and see what the artists do for the event. My take on it will be unique, as always. I hope to see you all there. We still have time so I will remind you again later and  with some more details later.

Other arty news,  I have agreed to be a part of the Cero world wide 10 year anniversary!  I actually will be doing a live piece for them. Come check the night’s events out on Feb 13 at Maxx Fish. Should be a fun night. Kori K will be spinning and there will be a lot of other cool art tables. Pepe will be painting with me so you know it will be cool.

T.A.G. – RIP Sweet Lady Of The Mountains

January 20, 2012

Sarah Burke

Hello everyone and welcome to the arts column for Whistler Is Awesome.

Sarah Burke,  Sept 3rd, – Jan 19th.  Rip Sweet Lady of the Mountains.

I will not talk of when I first photographed her or which picture I got published of her first. What I will talk about is her smile and her drive. Those are the traits that most of us knew and saw daily through her actions. She almost always had a smile on her face, even in pain she found the spirit to smile, that was Sarah. A very strong women with the motivation, dreams and desires of more than just a champion, she was a legend.

As you know, this week has turned sour with the news one of our heroes and an angel has gone. Sarah Burke has passed away.

It is a sad day for the sports world but as a friend said, “Through her young years, she has accomplished more than many dare to dream or even find conceivable.”  Words of truth, sad, but very true. She has done so much and become such a role model, spokesperson and even model for the sport that we can not help but look at her life in astounded way and say, she lived to ski and skied to live. She did that and she did it better than anyone. She was Sarah, the one.

May we all remember her fantastic smile and enthusiasm that affected us all while we are in this time of grieving. Please wish Rory and the Burke family your best wishes and if possible, maybe consider a small donation, or big, to help them pay for her medical costs they incurred in the US.  You can donate here. www.givefoward.com/sarahburke

Also,  I will offer this photo, professionally  printed, chrome piece to the highest bidder. I will then donate the money to give forward and the Burke family. Contact me here or on Facebook.

May we all remember your smile Sarah.

Whistler Arts Council, arne guttman, paper show, Paper This, Paper This, Millennium Place, Whistler, Jan 23 to Feb 9th.

Well, other arty news.  The Paper Show will be up at Millennium Place, Scotia Plaza as of later today!  Woot woot, this will be the last showing of “Paper This,”  the paper show I produced and curated over a year ago. Let me back track a bit. I made/created over 40 different pieces of custom handmade paper, 16 x 20 inces, out of many different mediums, then I gave them to some of the corridors brightest and most talented artists to do what they wanted. I have taken the show to Vancouver, Whistler, Squamish and now, finally, the last stop, Whistler again. The opening reception will be on January 26 7-9pm.   Unfortunately I will not be in the country so I hope you and all my friends will come to have a look at this great show that has cost us all much time, effort and love, not forgetting gas money too. Hope to hear stories of you being there and having a great time.  Enjoy.
