A long running and popular column here at Whistler Is Awesome has been our Chasing Tail column run by Whistler’s Jen Hames (follow her on Twitter, lot’s of interesting links). Jen introduced us to so many of Whistler’s cutest and most adorable pets and it’s been a lot of fun bumping into them around the Valley. Their owner’s are pretty nice too! Anyhow, after a brief hiatus from the WIA Chasing Tail column we’re bringing it back and hope to feature more of Whistler’s favorite furry friends. Stay tuned for info on how to have your dog featured in an upcoming Chasing Tail.

In the mean time, meet the fun loving Patch and next week we’ll introduce you to his owner, Dr. Loridawn Gordon of the Animal Health Clinic of Whistler. Loridawn will be the new editor here at Chasing Tail and we’re stoked to have her. But more on her later.

Name: Patch

Breed & Age: 2 year-old neutered male Currie Special

Best thing about being a dog in Whistler?

Freedom!!

Where are your stomping grounds?

Emerald, Meadow Park and Wedge

Goals for 2013?

My goals are to befriend every dog!

Favorite place to hang?

Blueberry docks, Alta Lake.

Favorite Whistler event of the year?

Halloween

What is your most valued toy or treat?

My blue squeaker! I also like chewing my owners luxury stick shifter. Eventually she replaced it with a cobra with glow in the dark led lights…I still like to nibble on it when she’s not looking!!

Both Kitzbuehel and Tirol were adopted from Whistler Animals Galore in October and have found their forever homes with a loving family in North Vancouver. They will be frequent visitors to the Whistler area both in winter and summer! Meet these furry weekend warriors, with Whistler roots, now.
Name: Kitzbuehel
Breed: 10 month old Lab Cross (Lab with Australian Shepherd which explains her lack of tail)
Favorite things in Whistler: Cruising the village, checking out the Whistler resident dogs especially her brother who lives in Whistler. Enjoys dog walks on the drive up between North Van and Whistler – Porteau, Brohme Lake etc. etc.
Other info: Loves any walk or hikes off leash. Haven’t yet seen cross country skiing, but Kitzbuehel is sure to love it.
Name: Tirola
Breed: 6 year old Husky/Malamute cross – sure looks like she has some wolf in her.
Favorite things in Whistler: winter weather – SNOW.
Other info: Loves to talk. When you meet her, she will tell you her life story.

Chasing Tail: Doya

August 14, 2012

Doya is a word that has yet to grace the pages of the dictionary, yet my money is that one day it will be crossing Emmanuel Lewis’ desk.  To quote Doya’s dad Marcus, the newly-introduced syntax means “anything and everything awesome: the absolute best”.  Which leaves little room for interpretation if you think about it, as for something to be dubbed ‘awesome’, it must have a wide consensus, and most people can’t agree on much.

You won’t find a person on the planet who would argue with the awesomeness of 10 week old Doya, who entered this world to melt the hearts of all who come across her path.

Breed: Her father is a Chesapeke-Chocolate Lab, her mother a Wolf.  Yes a Wolf.

Stomping ground: Alpha Lake Park, Blueberry Docks, The forest, Resort Cabs

Best thing about being a Whistler dog: “All the smells!  And dirt to dig in!  And all my dog friends!  Not to mention I get to see my parents and brothers and sisters from time to time, as they all live in Whistler too!”

Other info: “My master is single!”

WAG Dog Wash

Do you have a dirty pup? Then you’re in luck – tomorrow, Saturday July 28th, the local animal shelter WAG (Whistler Animals Galore) will be hosting their annual doggy wash at the Whistler Fire Station from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. And the rumour is that if you come early, your pup can even get his/her toenails painted.

There will also be a BBQ in the village and the newest flavours of yummy treats from Auntie Kim’s Better Bickies for your four-legged friends!

For more info, check out WAG’s website.

Chasing Tail: Sketchy

July 9, 2012

Sketchy the Terrier cross

Breed: Sketchy is a Terrier cross who at times appears to prance about like a coyote – definitely a true WAG dog. She apparently got her start in Seton, where some wild dogs attacked part of her litter.

Stomping ground: Emerald Estates – Sketchy has definitely established herself in the neighbourhood. She enjoys her evening strolls and running in the woods at any time.

Best thing about being a Whistler dog: “I am so happy to have convinced these humans to take me in, especially because I have my very own bed. Often, I go to work at Foto Source and help with deliveries and crowd control. I am also slowly warming up to the idea of some humans who ‘miss’ their dog leader and I occasionally allow them to get close to me. It is nice to see how happy they can get just by seeing me sitting without any restraining device and it is surprising how shocked they are to learn that part of my job is acting as a greeter outside the shop behind Citta’s. I actually spent a few hours apprenticing at Walmart for this and I am glad for the training they provided.”

Other info: “Last year on July 1st, as we returned from a holiday, my son decided that I could use an early birthday present and he met us at the bus with a young, nervous puppy. As challenging as the first little while was, and despite knowing that foster care had not worked for her in a previous home, we decided that we would overcome her ‘obstacles’ and make this work for all of us.

When our new puppy had been at WAG, the staff had given her the name ‘Duchess’. But after getting to know her, we decided at a family dinner that Duchess needed a new identity and, taking into account her nervous personality, we came up with ‘Sketchy’ as a perfect name.

Sketchy has now worked her way into our lives and our hearts and is showing us all the true potential that she has.” ~ Sketchy’s owners.

Breed: Golden Retriever
