2013 Deep Summer Photo Challenge at Crankworx Whistler Announces Five Heavy Hitting Photographers And Opens Entries For The Pinkbike.com Wildcard Search

Crankworx Whistler’s preeminent mountain bike photo contest, the Deep Summer Photo Challenge, has confirmed its roster of five pro photographers to compete in the August 14 slideshow competition, and has again opened the doors for the sixth contender with the Pinkbike Deep Summer Wildcard Search. This year’s show promises more variety and a broader perspective from photographers with expanded boundaries through the Sea to Sky Corridor from Squamish to Pemberton.

“The Deep Summer Photo Challenge is a crowd favourite at Crankworx Whistler every year,” says Crankworx General Manager Darren Kinnaird. “We decided to give the photographers and their teams a broader boundary to work with, while still including a percentage of their show from Whistler and the Whistler Mountain Bike Park. We are thrilled to have the talent we do on the roster for this years’ event and can’t wait to see who the Wildcard Challenge on Pinkbike.com will bring to the table.”

The five pro photographers set to storm the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and create a slideshow to be shown on Wednesday, August 14, are:

  • Scott Markewitz
  • Harookz
  • Garrett Grove
  • Nicolas Teichrob
  • Bruno Long

The Pinkbike Deep Summer Wildcard Search will determine the sixth photographer to join the competition.  See Pinkbike.com at this link for details and dates for the Pinkbike Deep Summer Wildcard Photographer Search.

The Deep Summer Photo Challenge will take place under the stars at the spectacular Whistler Olympic Plaza again in 2013. Priority seating and close sightlines to giant HD screens will be on offer with a number of ticketed seats available for $5. The area beyond the ticketed seating will be available for spectators to take in the Deep Summer Photo Challenge free of charge.

The photographers will rally their chosen athlete teams to embark on three days of intense shooting and editing commencing Saturday, August 10. Slideshows will be handed in by the end of the day Tuesday, August 13. Then on Wednesday, August 14 a massive crowd will experience deep summer in Whistler through the lenses of six elite mountain bike photographers with first place taking home $5,000, second place $3,000, and third place $2,000.

RSVP for the Deep Summer Photo Challenge at facebook.com/crankworx and stay tuned to www.crankworx.com for upcoming news. Connect with Crankworx through Facebook.com/crankworx, Twitter.com/crankworx or Instagram.com/crankworx.

The Deep Summer Photo Challenge at Crankworx Whistler is proud to be presented by SCOTT, Pinkbike and the Bearfoot Bistro.

August 9-18, 2013, the world’s best downhill, slopestyle and enduro riders will migrate to the Whistler Mountain Bike Park for the 10th Annual Crankworx Whistler. Crankworx Les 2 Alpes will take place July 6 – 14, 2013 and is the only Crankworx event to take place outside of North America. High-summer’s convergence of all things freeride, Crankworx is a 10-day festival of epic endurance, supreme flow, monster air and vertical-dropping riding. A time-tested stage for gravity-fed mountain biking, Crankworx has forged the future of freeride, launched careers and raised up a spectacle out of dirt, sweat and cheers. Feel the impact. Embrace the amplitude. Experience the awe that is Crankworx Whistler 2013.

I was born in South Africa where I studied Fine Art at the Johannesburg Art Foundation.  I feel very fortunate to have had a childhood in Africa, surrounded by the colour and rhythm of the African people and though I no longer live there, the forms and textures of Africa still reflects very strongly in my work.  For the last 14 years I have been working primarily in clay, using primitive methods of firing like sawdust and Naked Raku.  Without using glaze I can maintain the tactile quality of the clay, something that is very important to me because I want my work to invite touch as much as I want it to be visually pleasing.  I fell in love with the technique of Naked Raku because the raw texture of the clay and spontaneous markings created by the smoke firing during this process, give my work a stone-like quality.

The Photos

01  Mugs waiting to be fired.
02  Work looking up at me from inside the kiln.
03  My kids.
04  Completed work.
05  My work studio.
06  Me at work.
07  My pin board in my studio with my old drawings.. something I would like to re-visit again some day soon.
08  Collection of my work in progress.

The Questions

What neighbourhood do you live in?
I live in Alpine Meadows.

What do you do and where?
I work as a potter out of my home studio on Drifter way.

What are you working on & where can we find your work?
I am currently working on a series of clay bears and Naked raku vessels for the BC Gallery of Ceramics on Granville Island as well as preparing for the IDS interior design show this September at the Vancouver convention centre.  I am also working on building up stock as I am looking forward to another great season at the Whistler Farmers market this summer….that is where you can find me every Sunday from June till September.

The Proof: Eric Beckstead

Eric Beckstead grew up in Calgary, Alberta focused on skiing, skateboarding, surfing, photography, cinematography, art and lifestyle. After high school in Calgary, he studied cinematography in Vancouver, BC then moved to Whistler, BC where he currently resides. An injury sidelined him from any sports but helped him find the time to push his artistic passions. He currently shoots with professional athletes, models and artists of all levels.

The Photos

01  I have skied since I was 2 and most likely wouldn’t live in Whistler if this hadn’t been the case.  This is where I always want to be and despite a fractured tibia, multiple torn ligaments and tendons I had to get a turn in for this shot.
02  My personal studio and workshop in Alta.
03  Off The Wall Kids x Coldsmoke.
04  I came across this living fawn while filming in Merritt, at this young age they are still in the midst of learning how to walk and are taught to lay still and blend with their surroundings. While I snapped photos the mother was trying to bait us away from her young.
05  Surfing in Sombrio with the homies!  Thanks Sauterlee Surfboards for the custom design!
06  Gainer off the tree platform at loggers lake, definitely one of my favourite haunts in Whistler.  I am really against the municipality cutting down all the ropeswings that locals have spent so much time setting up just because people got hurt.  Everyone swings knowing a massive risk is involved, if someone is hurt on a cliff on the mountain are they going to remove that too?
07  Sample of my art.  Message me for custom orders or details.
08  Representing Whistler Alternative Lifestyle magazine Features/Webisodes- http://www.coldsmokeco.com/features/

The Questions

What neighbourhood do you live in?
Alta Vista.

What do you do and where?
I work for myself as a photographer, cinematographer and artist.

What are you working on?
I am currently putting my focus into a video magazine style project dropping as webisodes.  Along with Anna Lengstrand, we are featuring Whistlers Alternative Lifestyle and the people that make it up.  Each video mag will feature an artist, athlete and entrepreneur while portraying them in a unique light.  Our goal is to promote talented individuals and businesses while showing a side of Whistler a weekend warrior or seasonal traveler may never see.

Under the label, Off The Wall Kids, we want to give the people of Whistler a fresh voice.  Off The Wall Kids represent the youthful and young at heart. Anyone who aims to inspire, create and dream is OTWK.  Anyone pushing the limits, making changes in the right directions and never taking anything at face value is OTWK.  With Whistler Alternative Lifestyle video mags we will bring these Off The Wall Kids into the spotlight and share their stories.

Where can we find your work?
Off The Wall Kids trailer and future video mags can be found at http://www.coldsmokeco.com/otwk/

We chose to work with Coldsmoke since they represent everything we are about.  (If you’ve ever heard of Powder Mountain Heli/Cat Skiing you have already heard of them).  Coldsmoke Co. is a lifestyle company based out of Venice, CA with a really sick clothing line of military influenced fashion meets function approach that perfectly suits the environment we surround ourselves with in Whistler.

Born and raised in Toronto Ontario, I made the move out west many years ago and became one of the statistics of those who came but never left… But it has become home, and I love living here.  Drawn to the mountains by earlier travels through the Himalayas, I knew when I came here for a visit that I needed to be around the energy that the mountains give off.  My prior love for all things outdoors made the transition pretty seamless – enough so that it is hard to think I have been here over 10 years now!

Living in Whistler has also allowed me to continually work on my photography, given the valley can provide an endless list of vistas and subjects to shoot! Though much of my shooting history has been surrounding sport, I have more recently been trying to hone my eye for fine art shots, as well as ridding my shyness in shooting portraits.  At the moment,  I am focusing on getting more involved as event photographer for larger promoters… Nothing like being up front an in the middle of the action during a high-energy concert!

Feel free to check out my work, and am always open to people contacting me about photo-related questions and/ or requests!

The Photos

01  Home sweet home!
02  Home view from home!
03  Play toys inside of home!
04  The hummingbirds that come to visit my home!
05  Where I have my morning coffee while at home!
06  Where I seem to spend half my time when at home…! :-p
07  My wolf and my canoe when getting away from home
08  Nothing to do with my home, just one of my favourite shots and one the more fun shoots from this past winter!

The Questions

What neighbourhood do you live in?
I live on Alta Lake Rd, near Rainbow Park. Best view in town!

What do you do and where?
I work as an Ice Maker and Refrigeration Operator at the Whistler Sliding Centre (bobsleigh track).

What are you working on?
Getting my website, facebook page, Flickr and SmugMug accounts more streamlined and comprehensive image-wise.  Also working on my digital workflow, utilizing wi-fi, Bluetooth, tablets and such to be able to shoot, edit and send files remotely, real-time on location.  Might be the new wave in event coverage and photojournalism!

Even though I grew up in the lower mainland of BC, I had never skied or ridden Whistler before I moved here in 2001. So while falling in love with snowboarding at a small resort like Ski Hemlock, the idea of moving to the biggest and best mountains in the world seemed like a good idea. Not knowing it would be the most wonderful idea ever, I only planned on being here for at least a winter season. 12 years later and I’m still in love with this giant playground.

It has been an incredible journey. As to where I am now in my life, I have been shaped into who I am through my friends, family and all the activities that I enjoy.

Most of my wood cutting is inspired by my lovely girlfriend Chantelle Pellerin (Artist and outdoor enthusiast). Also I have had help and guidance from my good friend Tom Eddie. In the beginning there has been some trial and error, but it has become natural over a short time.

Although I do like some solitude I mostly enjoy sharing adventures with my lady and with our friends. Even though I usually keep my excitement inside, I’m always having a good time and am thrilled to share our experiences.

The Photos
01  Silas, man of the woods.  From the Greek name Silvanus, which means ‘forest’ or ‘woods’.
Leroy, king of the house. of the French origin Le Roi, meaning ‘king’.
02  ‘The Family’.  Chantelle, Lola, Leroy and myself make quite the good looking foursome.
03  Of course I prefer long pow laps with my friends, but I also enjoy landing on my feet in the terrain parks.
04  Biking with friends is very entertaining and most enjoyable.
05  Concentration is key.
06  I do my best to manipulate these instruments in order to create items that everyone can enjoy.
07  Some examples of frames, shelves and Chantiliers.
08  Like many other talented people in this town I enjoy taking photos.  I call this one ‘Chantilope from Heaven’.

The Proof: Joel Loverin

There’s a reason we call Joel the people’s hero.  Joel is one of those people who you always love to see around town or on the hill.  He has a passion for life that is super contagious.  He’ll never fail to greet you with a smile and he’s always good for a laugh.  I’m lucky enough to spend a great deal of time with him exploring the coast range around Whistler on snowmobiles and split boards.  His passion for life really shines through in his timeless shred style and through his eye catching graffiti art.  When you watch one of his web edits or see him in the pages of Snowboard Canada you’ll know what I mean.

Mike Douglas is such a hipster. If you didn’t already know this or didn’t see it coming, we have pictures to prove it and 2000 of Whistler’s finest crowd to back up our claim. From his shoes to his scarf to his Instagram how-to, host Mike made any late arriving Whistler-loc ask the same thing: “What the hell is Mike Douglas wearing?”

Ahh, but I digress before we begin. So here’s the rundown on the 16th annual Olympus Pro Photographer Showdown at the World Ski & Snowboard Festival.

Nice scarf. Photo: Jeremy Postal

The 72 Hour Filmmaker ENCORE

Words & photos from Josh Bauer.

With the World Ski & Snowboard Festival comes arguably one of the most exciting events of the festival, the 72 Hour Filmmakers Showdown. This year it grew and expanded to include another night of finals in which the People Choice was awarded. Votes were tallied by voting with ping ping balls, I abstained and kept my ball cause I am collecting them to do this science experiment. Serious.

Conrad Shapansky and his crew won the grand judged prize with this short film the night before and and took home $10,000 for their efforts; and rightly so they had a creative and entertaining film. It seems more often than not the films that win are creative concept films; which maybe speaks to future cotestants strategy for writing.

Long time contestant Angie Nolan and crew won the People’s Choice with a great movie about making a Canadian reality tv series; complete with Harper jokes and all. Congrats to the winners on both nights!
