Whistlerites self-identify as informed, opinionated, and outspoken. The Whistler Museum is going to put this assumption to the test.

We are excited to announce our new event series, WHISTLERDEBATES. Taking inspiration from the Doha Debates, our aim is to provide a forum for respectful, informed dialogue on wide-ranging topics of local or general interest. Debates will take place year-round and usually coincide with ongoing festivals and events. All debates will feature a strong audience participation component, so come armed with an opinion, an open mind, and a desire to engage with some of the most pressing topics of our times.

OCTOBER 14, 2012 Writer’s Debate: (Whistler believes… The internet is killing literature):

Thanks to digital technologies the written word is more widespread than ever, but how much is really being said? Is cheap (or free) content pricing the truly-talented out of the market? Or is the spark of literary genius too bright to be extinguished by some measly little internet? Come watch impassioned wordsmiths Feet Banks, Jillian Christmas, Jesse Ferreras, and Chelsea Johnson assess the written word’s future (or lack thereof) in our increasingly plugged-in world.

Where:        Whistler Museum (4333 Main Street)

When:          Sunday, October 14th, 6-7pm (doors 5:30)

Tickets:        $7 ($5 for museum members, or with a Reader’s and Writer’s Festival pass) Purchase at Whistler Museum

More info:    Jeff Slack, Whistler Museum Programs Manager, programs@whistlermuseum.org, 604-932-2019

Tales From the Backcountry (Whistler believes… more should be done to improve access to the backcountry):

Think the Spearhead Huts are the greatest idea since fat skis? Does the ongoing rush to the backcountry risks spoiling the solitude (and fresh pow) that draws us out there in the first place? How do we best maintain a relationship with wilderness in our increasingly urban, on-line world? If you have ever pondered such matters, this night is for you. Come watch prominent members of the backcountry community debate the merits of improved access to that rugged and remote paradise, the backcountry.

Where:        Millennium Place

When:         Monday, October 29th, 8-9pm (doors 7:30)

Tickets:        $10 advance/$12 day of event, available at Millennium Place and Whistler Museum

More info:    Jeff Slack, Whistler Museum Programs Manager, programs@whistlermuseum.org, 604-932-2019
